Lab # 37 - Chemical Weathering Rate.
This lab has 2 parts. Part 1 - (Front page) is based on the reaction of chalk (mineral calcite) with acid. (vinegar)
To complete this section of the activity you need to watch the attached video segment. Part I demonstrates how acid reacts with calcite and limestone. (THINK CAVES AND SINKHOLES). You do not need to record any of this on the lab.
Part II shows how crushing the chalk changes the rate of chemical weathering. This is the section of the video that you need to complete the front page of the lab activity.
CHEMICAL WEATHERING VIDEO.
Part II - This section shows how temperature will change the rate of chemical weathering. In this part Alka Seltzer is used as a model for rock material. 3 tablets of Alka Seltzer were reacted with water at different temperatures and the experiment was captured with Time Lapse photography.
I do not have the data or the videos for this experiment yet. I will post them when I get them from the students who did the lab Monday after school.

Lab # 38 - Physical Weathering - Abrasion.
This activity uses Sugar cubes to model particles being transported and abraded by the wind or water. The experiment was conducted Monday after school and all of the results were captured using Time Lapse techniques.
STEP ONE - As a class read through the INTRODUCTION on the first page.
STEP TWO - Watch the BLA Video on Lab #38 Physical Weathering - Abrasion. While you watch the video sketch the sugar cubes for each measured observation. Record the mass of the sugar cubes at times 0,3,6,9,12, and 15 minutes.
STEP THREE - Calculate the % mass loss and draw the graphs in pencil, Answer all questions in complete sentences.

HOMEWORK -
Labs are due on Monday 3/18.
