s Mr. Abbott has been teaching in Bellmore-Merrick since 1990. He currently teaches Regents Earth Science at Grand Avenue Middle School. Mr. Abbott is the coach of the 8th grade boys tennis team and the assistant coach for the Grand Avenue wrestling team.
He is actively involved in several professional science teacher organizations. Mr. Abbott has served as the subject area representative (SAR) for the Nassau Section of the Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS) for 15 years. He is currently the past-president of the New York Earth Science Teachers Association (NYESTA) and a member of National Earth Science Teachers Association. He is fortunate to have the opportunity to present workshops and conferences for other educators throughout New York State.
In 2014 Mr. Abbott was awarded the Excellence in Science Teaching Award - Intermediate Level at the annual STANYS convention. In 2015 he received the Outstanding Earth Science Teacher award for New York State from the National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT).
On December 22nd, 2016 Mr. Abbott received a phone call in the library at Grand Avenue saying he had been matched with an organ donor. He received a heart transplant at Mt. Sinai hospital in New York City and returned to the classroom on April 18, 2017. Every day he thanks his unknown donor who has allowed him to continue to experience our wonderful world. He strives to make every day meaningful to honor his donor and family whose generosity has saved his life. He has become an active volunteer for LiveOnNY to help promote organ donation. Mr. Abbott attended the Transplant Games of America in Salt Lake City this summer and was proud to bring home a bronze medal in the long jump. He even took part in establishing a new Guinness World Record. He hopes to attend the World Transplant Games in England next summer as part of Team USA.
Mr. Abbott and his wife are both science teachers. They have 2 daughters who they are tremendously proud of. In his spare time Mr. Abbott enjoys staying active by biking, playing tennis, and kayaking. Other hobbies include photography, travel and Broadway Theatre. Of course a ride on a mountain Segway can be fun!
